Zeytince Association has decided to establish an “Olive School” in order to carry out its activities in 2015 and in this line, it has chosen Karaburun district as a study area within the framework of the “Peninsula Sustainable Development Strategy 2014 – 2023” report by IZKA. Thus, the studies initiated by the Karaburun District Governorate were completed with the permission of the Ministry of National Education, İzmir Provincial Directorate of National Education, Directorate of İzmir Provincial Directorate, Karaburun Commodity Directorate and the former primary school, which was evacuated and depleted due to the transfer of education system in Karaburun Inecik village since 1992, was rented to our association. A new prefabricated building was built at the same area instead of the old primary school building and the garden around the school are designed accordingly.

Olive School, starting its activities in May 2017, is planned to operate as ;

  • A stopover for visitors, hikers and cyclists on the Ephesus – Mimas Cultural Route
  • Information and advice center for Olive Route,
  • An ecological agricultural education center, which provides protection of natural, cultural and industrial assets, especially olive and olive products, and opportunities for employment and income based on these assets.

Olive School is a stopover point and at the same time as an information, counseling and training center;

  • Organizing activities such as training seminars, workshops and harvest festivals will contribute to increasing the awareness of the natural, industrial and cultural heritage of the region at the national and international level, and to the preservation and enrichment of this heritage.
  • Organizing training and workshop activities in the areas of production, consumption and marketing related to products in the foreground;
  • Organization of regional institutions, especially for women and young people, to create new employment and income generating areas,
  • Increasing the quality and quantity of added value produced in the region,
  • Through these activities, it will contribute to increasing the prosperity of the region and thus preventing the migration from the village to the city.
  • Organizing national and international workshops to support the integration of the peninsula into international ecological tourism and eco-networks.

In addition to being a stopover point for visitors, hikers and cyclists on this Ephesus – Mimas Cultural Route, the Olive School is an education and counselling and solidarity center aimed at preserving natural, cultural and industrial assets, especially olive and olive products, and creating employment and income based on these assets in the region.
Moreover the aim is to create a space where all kinds of activities respect human beings and have ecological concerns and support the disciplines such as science, art, sports and so on.

In this context,

  • Organizing activities such as training seminars, workshops and harvest festivals will contribute to increasing the awareness of the natural, industrial and cultural heritage of the region at the national and international level, and to the preservation and enrichment of this heritage.
  • Organizing training and workshop activities in the fields of production, consumption and marketing of the products;
  • Founding regional institutions, especially for women and young people, to create new employment and income generating areas,
  • Increasing the quality and quantity of added value produced in the region,
  • Increasing the prosperity of the region and thus preventing the migration from the village to the village.
  • Organizing national and international workshops to support the integration of the peninsula into international ecological tourism and eco-networks.
  • By public events, increasing the awareness and attractiveness of Ephesus – Mimas Culture Route and Olive Road at national and international level,
  • Through the created learning and discussion platform, walkers and cyclists will come together with the residents and producers in the region, thus providing the medium for the emergence of innovative and creative ideas.

Target groups of activities organized by Olive School:

  • Those living in the peninsula, especially young people and women,
  • Ephesus – Mimas Cultural Route and Olive Road visitors, hikers and cyclists,
  • Students studying in all disciplines of the country and abroad, researchers,
  • Cooperatives, especially olive producers, local producers, non-governmental organizations, professional chambers,
  • Academicians and experts from within and outside the country, institution representatives,
  • Persons who desire to participate in training and promotional activities.

The activities of the Olive School can be summarized as follows:

  • Educational Activities (education activities in which olive and ecology are mainly encountered, scientific knowledge and ancient knowledge)
  • Workshop Activities (workshops in painting, music, photography, philosophy, agriculture, ecology, useful herbs, etc.)
  • Social Activities (harvest festival, monumental tree tours, antique and stone print workshop visits)

Olive School is predicted to take part in Delice Gourmet Cities network and Slow Food. Thus, it will be possible to maintain activities starting at the local level to go to the international level. It is also planned to establish links to international ecocities, to make reciprocal visits, to provide scholarships to students and researchers and to create voluntary programs at national and international levels for various activities.
